It’s no surprise that there has been very little research on the cannabis plant over the last 7 decades. But now genetic research is exploding. In this episode we return the the SIU Hemp and cannabis symposium. This interview is the last of a three part series focusing on agronomy and genetic research. Our guest is Oussama Badad, a PHD candidate at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Oussama is the co-founder and chief scientist of Growmics ( a cannabis testing company) and lead geneticist at Trilogene ( a cannabis genetics company). Today Oussama tells us about his research and technology he uses to create strains that express minor cannabinoids and plant analysis services.
Growmics
Oussama is the founder of Growmics. It seeks to provide plant researchers with the tools needed to conduct their essential work. They are currently developing kits for a broad range of plant analyses such as Contaminant Testing, DNA-Seq, RNA-Seq, Proteomic Analysis (Mass Spec), Gene Editing (CRISPR), and Epigenetic Assays. Growmics offers full end-to-end services for a variety of analyses. After receiving client samples, they provide any necessary extraction, sequencing, and comprehensive bioinformatic analysis and reporting.
Trilogene Seeds
Trilogene Seeds is a team breeders & growers creating feminized hemp seeds for extraction efficient, multi-purpose, and smokable hemp varieties with high terpene content. They provide cutting edge technology to develop stable genetics for every microclimate and photoperiod in the world. To develop a Trilogene varietal, they genotype and hunt for phenotypes that express the most desirable traits – bud structure, trichome production, terpene profiles, drought resistance, yield, & more. Each hand-selected cultivar then goes through an extensive testing process and must meet rigorous performance standards before it is released to the market. They have enhanced photoperiodic and autoflower genetics suitable for outdoor, indoor, and greenhouse cultivation and are ideal for cannabinoid extraction, smokable craft flower, dual crop, and the industrial hemp market. Their CBD seeds are available to those looking to buy hemp seeds online, whether that is wholesale bulk hemp seeds for the large-scale grower or smaller quantities for the hobbyist. We also offer hemp clones, hemp seedlings, and fiber-dominant cultivars for fiber and hurd production.
Hemp Research Plot
Spencer’s research focuses on statewide efforts in Illinois, as well as broad efforts across the Midwest for hemp farming. The research includes new cultivars, optimized for Illinois or for use in unique row crop production systems where fiber, seed, and cannabinoids can be harvested from the same crop.
SIU Hemp and Cannabis Symposium
This 3rd symposium was held in person at the SIU Carbondale, Student Center. Attendees watched presentations on the possibilities of growing and marketing hemp/Cannabis products. The development of a business model for taking fiber hemp from the farm to the processing facility will be discussed by a leading innovator. Participants heard about new developments in the use of hemp materials in building and construction. Exhibitors and vendors displayed modern production technologies in cannabis, in addition to consumer products. Participants also heard about new developments in the use of hemp materials in building and construction.
