Have you done your research on hemp? Today we listen to the second part of a three part series of interviews at the SIU Hemp and Cannabis Symposium. We meet graduate student Spencer Schuchman who manages a hemp research plot near Carbondale Illinois under the guidance of Dr. Karla Gage. In this episode Spencer shares an audio tour of the hemp plants, what varieties they are growing, how the plants are thriving despite difficult Midwest weather and what results they’ve found to date.
Hemp Research Plot
Spencer’s research focuses on statewide efforts in Illinois, as well as broad efforts across the Midwest for hemp farming. The research includes new cultivars, optimized for Illinois or for use in unique row crop production systems where fiber, seed, and cannabinoids can be harvested from the same crop.
SIU Hemp and Cannabis Symposium
This 3rd symposium was held in person at the SIU Carbondale, Student Center. Attendees watched presentations on the possibilities of growing and marketing hemp/Cannabis products. The development of a business model for taking fiber hemp from the farm to the processing facility will be discussed by a leading innovator. Participants heard about new developments in the use of hemp materials in building and construction. Exhibitors and vendors displayed modern production technologies in cannabis, in addition to consumer products. Participants also heard about new developments in the use of hemp materials in building and construction.
