We are entering the end of the green rush, a more competitive landscape where dispensaries are competing not just against the stigma of cannabis but other dispensaries too. In this episode we meet Charlena Berry, author of the new book Breaking the Stigma Racism, the Opioid endemic, Lies, and Inviting Grandma to the Dispensary. We talk about business strategies for cannabis retailers and things they can do win in a competitive market place.
Dispensaries Only Get One First Impression
Across the nations dispensaries are missing the mark. The first experience is not warm and welcoming especially when it comes to boomers:
- budtenders not outgoing and helpful
- boomers uncomfortable entering the door
- managers/owners are arrogant
- leaders not putting in the work nor modeling good behavior
Innovations to Attract New Dispensary Customers
There are many things dispensaries can do to attract new clients:
- have systems in place to stay organized – software
- introduce loyalty programs and texting marketing (some carriers are censoring)
- use photos without text to avoid censoring during texting campaigns
- provide coupons with time limited offers
- host events and reasons to create a sense of urgency for customer returns
How to Retain Repeat Customers
Charlena shared thoughts on what dispensaries can do to retain clients and make them repeat visitors.
- customers want to feel like they got a deal
- customers want to feel they are appreciated
- customers want specific strains
Dispensary Branding Matters
In regards to branding and marketing, there are many common mistakes retailers make. But they can turn it around with the following:
- make sure brand is inclusive, all generations, not just young 20-30 year old’s
- make sure it attracts more than just men
- have a logo that’s friendly of all ages, genders, and race
- goal is to get returning customers and spend more money each time.
New Book: Breaking the Stigma
- all cannabis use is medical use
- if cannabis was available to society, we could have avoided the last two decades of opioid deaths
