What does blockchain and molecular tagging have to do with cannabis? In this episode our guest John Shearman shares a new technology that can track the influx of new cannabis strains. These new strains are highly variable with potentially significant chemical changes between batches and lots. There are subtle changes in the chemical expression of various strains by genetic structure or environmental conditions. These changes have significant clinical effects on the patients using this treatment option.
With so many strains available, and with relatively limited information on strain composition or genetic lineage, producers and their patients have had little ability to control what the been taking over time.
It begs the question, how can producers track all these strains?
Blockchain and Molecular Tagging
Solutions to these problems are emerging including blockchain and molecular tagging. Blockchain can be used to help traditional medicine adopt the use of cannabis products as a treatment option, regardless of the chemical composition of each product. The blockchain tracks the signature molecular tag placed at the source of the cannabis. These tags are safe and secure.
John described the ADNAS POD tagging system and how it’s a scalable, portable and expandable solution to accommodate the different sizes and types of growers in the industry. John explained that when applying a tag-infused fog to hemp and marijuana plants it allows for tracking from the cultivator’s facility or farm to either a dispensary or processing facility. This greatly simplifies complying with the oversight of regulatory provisions.
Now producers can determine the origin of cannabis at any point in the distribution chain. According to John, the only true way to achieve this is by directly tagging cannabis at its source.
