We visited the Cannabis Drinks Expo in Chicago and met Alison Modrak. Alison provides membership relations for the American Trade Association for Cannabis and Hemp (ATACH). We asked Alison about the trade association and the challenges they face. According to Alison, the association is focusing on cannabis regulations. standardization and advocacy at the federal level. One big topic of interest is safe banking. Also standardization of THC levels, ability to sell canna drinks outside of dispensaries and across state lines.
Federal Legalization of Cannabis
We asked Alison, what’s holding up federal legalization. She mentioned two issues:
- Each state has a different agenda, it’s difficult to come up with a cohesive strategy.
- The narrative of the war on drugs is hard to erase. Cannabis is not a gateway drug.
When will legalization occur? Probably not in the next few years. Why? It’s not at the top of this countries agenda. The industry needs to keep pushing forward. In time it will find success.
